Maclean Outdoors is based in the scenic township of Maclean, situated on the banks of the Clarence river, Nth NSW. Maclean is centrally located to the beautiful beaches of Iluka, Yamba, Angourie and Brooms Head all within 30 minutes drive. Major nearby towns include Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Ballina, Lismore, and Byron Bay. Maclean Outdoors is located in the CBD, only 80 metres from the public boat ramp.
We specialise in Hobie Kayaks, offering traditional kayaks as well as the unique pedal (and or sail) powered Mirage kayaks, featuring Hobie's patented Mirage Drive. Solo and tandem models are available in both styles. We also specialise in kayak fishing & kayak accessories. We can also arrange trade in deals on Hobie kayaks.
Blessed with a fortunate proximity to the Clarence river, we can offer 'try-before-you-buy' demo rides (read the services section for more information). Getting on to the water and testing a kayak before buying is well advised and Maclean Outdoors is happy to offer that service by appointment. All Hobie kayak models are available for demonstration.
About Hobie kayaks
Hobie kayaks are one of the most popular brands of sit-on-top kayaks in Australia, and for good reason. Manufactured in the USA by Hobie cat, there is a large variety of kayak models in the Hobie fleet. Whatever your size or intended pursuit, Hobie have built a kayak just for you. Whether you're looking for something for general recreation, exploring, touring, camping, fishing, photography or fitness, Hobie has you covered.
All Hobie kayaks are rotomoulded from high-grade super-linear polyethylene plastic and are highly durable, UV resistant and lightweight. All models come complete with everything you need to get on the water and start having fun. This includes paddle, seat/backrest, water bottle and dry bag.
The mirage range of Hobie kayaks are also capable of being pedalled and sailed as well as paddled, giving the user a wide range of propulision options. Pedal-powered kayaking is becoming increasingly popular amongst kayak anglers, birdwatchers and photographers, largely due to the obvious advantages of hands-free propulsion.
The pedal-powered 'engine' of the Hobie Mirage kayaks is the Mirage Drive unit. Employing similar principles that a penguin uses for mobility, the pedals force the fins to oscilate back and forth, pushing water backwards and propelling the kayak forward. The Mirage Drive can achieve a surprising amount of speed without a whole lot of physical effort.
The most recent kayak innovations to come from Hobie are the new inflatable kayaks, the i9s, i12 and i14. Not only are these the first pedal-powered inflatable kayaks in the world, they can also be paddled and sailed. The 'i' series kayaks incorporate 3 seperate air chambers and are incredibly bouyant and highly durable, featuring a thick reinforced PVC skin (double-skin base). The i12 and i14 also feature a large storage compartent to keep gear dry.
Hobie's flagship kayak is more than just a kayak - it's also a trimaran sailing boat. The Adventure Island incorporates the Adventure hull with a large sail and two heavy duty amas. Combined with the mirage drive, the Adventure Island is the fastest and most versatile kayak in the Hobie fleet. The Island is capable of being used as a stand-alone kayak and the sail and amas can be fitted quickly to form the trimaran configuration. Anglers are also enjoying the ability to turn it into an outrigger styke kayak by fitting a single pontoon.

New era for Maclean Outdoors
For those of you who haven't seen the Maclean Outdoors store it might be surprising to learn that the shop itself is a mixed business that up until today, also sells fuel and the obligatory service-station items that come along with it. The fuel service side of the business winds up at the close of business today, which is going to mean some significant changes for the stock lines, layout and presentation. We'll be expanding the outdoor recreation side of the business, growing further into camping gear and paddle sports.
We've been growing the range of kayak and camping accessories steadily over the past 6 months and have reached a point where we've run out of room to display it all properly so we're looking forward to having a bit more room to move.

Rod leashes are us
We've started making our own kayak fishing rod leashes, inspired by the design of Ocean Kayak's rod leash. Impressed by it's simple design and quality materials and construction, the only thing we didn't like about it was the price. So having purchased everything we need (tools and materials) to make them ourselves, we've shamelessly reverse-engineered their design and made a few minor adjustments after several field tests (slightly stretchier bungee, and tighter woven braided cord for end loops - the 316 stainless steel snap hook is identical).
We are highly confident that our rod leashes are of the best quality available and by making them ourselves, can also afford to sell them at a much more reasonable price than the Ocean Kayak variant that inspired them.
We've made them in 3 sizes (small, medium & large) and are all now available.

Island tramps in stock
Hobie have released a long-requested product specifically designed for the Hobie Island: the Island tramp. These heavy duty tramps fit onto the akas to provide stable platforms either side of the boat, making for a drier ride, allow for hiking outboard for improved sailing performance in stronger winds, afford copius amounts of storage space and could even be used to carry a lightweight passenger, pet or montrous fish. They are easily installed and removed and are a truly invaluable addition to the Island Adventure. In stock now. Available in black and grey.

New products added, online catalogue updates & Ebay shop
We've been busily tinkering away on the website lately, revising the product catagory stucture for pur online catalogue, making it a little easier to find various products. Along the way we've added a substancial amount of new products, with more on the way.
On top of that we've also opened an Ebay store, where we've made a lot of the accessories available for purchase. After receiving numerous requests to facilitate online transactions, it was hard for us to go past Ebay's time-proven e-commerce system, which is both reliable and highly functional. If you're familiar with ebay and like the way it works, you may want to add our store to your favourites list.

Aide 1st aid kits now available
We've been on the lookout for some sea-worthy 1st aid kits to add to our range and have found it in the Aide 1st aid kits, which come neatly packed into a touch waterproof drybag (clear on one side, safety orange on the other).
There are two sizes available - a smaller model (the Comp SC) which is ideal for camping, hiking and kayaking. The larger Adventure SC is better suited for longer expedition style ventures, as well as for emergency use in boats, cars, etc.

Island conversion kits added to range
We've just started stocking the Island conversion kit in Hibiscus, Papaya and Dune (pictured above). The Island conversion kit will turn a Hobie Adventure kayak (2007 model or newer) into the all-singing, all-dancing Island trimaran. New model Pro Angler arrived
The latest Hobie fishing kayak has arrived... and what a fishing kayak it is. Maclean Outdoors currently has the Hobie Pro Angler available in all 3 colours (dune, moss and papaya yellow). At the time of writing, stock of the Pro Angler in Australia is very limited, so if you want to take one for a test ride, let us know ASAP.

Lighting & cooking section added
Another couple of sections have been added to the Maclean Outdoors online catalogue, dedicated to lighting products and ultra-light cooking products (hand picked for suitability for activities such as kayak camping and hiking). We've just started stocking Petzl headlamps and thought it was a perfect opportunity to shed some light.
Not only have we added the best sellers from the Petzl range, we've also included the Firefly drink bottle lantern cap. This product is one of those items that you've probably never heard of, but will see the beauty in immediately.
We're now also stocking MSR gas and liquid fuel products (to compliment our budget range of backpacking stoves). More products and product catagories will be added over the next week or so.
